Running tests in parallel

Postby waclaw » 20 Sep 2012, 23:42

Hi

I can't find a way to run Opensphere tests in parallel, is it at all possible? I could speed up their execution probably. If it's currently not doable, do you plan to add such a feature in the future?

thanks

Today if you run a set of test suites through the menu item Testing/Run Test Suites or in batch mode, they will run one after another. When a test suite is running inside the Opensphere GUI, you can manually start additional test suites and they will perform in parallel. The same is true for test cases.

We will enable Opensphere to run test suites and test cases in parallel soon.

Thanks for your answer urs.

What about running more instances of Opensphere process concurrently? Is this acceptable/supported solution?

Running multiple instances of the Opensphere program on a same computer is basically possible as long as you don’t work on the same project. Therefore you should first unselect the option “Open last project on program start” that can be found on the “File” panel when you open the tool properties dialog (menu item Tool/Tool Options…).

Please keep in mind that the different program instances will write global definitions (i.e. JMS providers) to the same shared files and would mutually overwrite changes made by the user.

That's cool. It sounds like a risky feature though, as users could use common resources for separate test cases (e.g. JMS queues). If the tests will be accessing the resources concurrently, it may cause real havoc. Maybe it could be detected somehow?

Opensphere indeed lets the user open the same project in multiple instances. Shouldn't it be forbidden?

We do not want to impose this restriction to the Opensphere users. It can be useful to open a same project in multiple instances of Opensphere, which also implies multiple JVMs. This can be the case if you want to produce a huge volume of messages for example.
